About Ilhéu
Ilhéu is a biannual print magazine rooted in the Azores — an archipelago of nine volcanic islands suspended in the Atlantic, halfway between Europe and America. We exist to tell the stories that emerge from this singular place: the voices, the art, the conflicts, and the quiet beauty of islands that have long shaped the world while remaining apart from it.
Each edition is built around a single island, gathering writers, artists, photographers, and thinkers whose work is inseparable from the Atlantic. We publish in print because we believe in the magazine as object — something to hold, to return to, to keep. The ocean taught us patience, and we think good work deserves it.
Ilhéu is named for the small rocky islets that appear off the Azorean coast — outcroppings that seem marginal from a distance but are, up close, entire worlds. That is the spirit of this magazine: to turn towards the margins and find them full of life.
